Description

This class is pre recorded, and is available yo watch at your leisure.

In this 2-hour class we'll mix collage, stamping, and mark making to create patched-up layers of texture, pattern, and colour. We'll start with our background and then combine techniques and elements to construct geometric patchwork shapes as well as our focal points.

During the course of the workshop we'll complete one art journal page with pieces left to use on additional projects (like the smaller art journal page shown in my sample photos.) You can also choose to work on loose paper or on a canvas or other substrate.

Student Supply List:

Tools:

  • Rubber stamps  (I'll be using my EGL07 "India" stamp set from PaperArtsy but you can use other stamps if you prefer. The Artistic Stamper carries all of my stamps.)
  • Acrylic blocks if using unmounted stamps
  • Scissors
  • Paint brushes
    • I'll be using 1" chip brushes with my paint
    • A brush or other applicator for matte medium
  • Optional Heat gun
  • Optional - Ruler
  • Optional - Compass or template for the large shapes

Adhesives:

  • Matte medium
  • A white glue like Tacky Glue or PVA
  • Optional - A good glue stick (I'll be using Avery.)
  • Optional - Washi tape (I'll use a few different rolls / patterns)

Paper & Substrates:

  • 1 sheet heavy weight watercolour paper, cardstock, or similar as your substrate (I used PaperArtsy Super Smooth Heavy card for mine.) You can also use your art journal, a canvas, etc...
  • 4-5 good sized pieces of book paper, gelli prints, patterned paper, etc... in colours that will work well with your selected palette of paints.
  • 1 sheet 12x12 white cardstock (cut into 4 - 6" x 6" pieces.)
  • 1 sheet of patterned paper or a gelli print in colours that match your paints.
  • A few smaller patterned papers or gelli prints as well as paper (plain or patterned - neutral) to stamp your focal elements.

Inks, Paints, Pens, etc...:

  • 5 - 9 colours of acrylic paint that work together (I'll be using PaperArtsy Fresco paints.) Note that my samples used analogous and a split-complementary colour schemes.
    • We'll use 4 colours to make our patchwork pieces - I suggest a light and dark of the same hue (IE I used Pistachio and Gumboots - both green, as one of the 4 colours.) You can also choose to just use 4 main colours.
    • 1 colour will go in our background. I suggest a neutral like Toffee or something similar. Translucent is ideal.
  • Ink pads (I'll be using Jet Black and Sepia Archival Inks as well as a brown VersaFine Clair pigment ink pad.)
  • Optional - A black pen for journaling and mark making.
  • Optional - Pens or markers for colouring (I used Tombow dual-tip markers.)
  • Optional - A black marker, paint pen, etc... for mark making and / or writing (I'm using black acrylic ink in a Fineline applicator.)

Miscellaneous:

  • Baby wipes
  • Paper towels / Kitchen roll

The Artistic Stamper carries many class supplies that are not listed in their online store. If you're local, their shop is open! (Check first for modified store hours.) You can also call them to see if they have what you need and can arrange shipment.

Technical Requirements:

  • You must have a Facebook account - it's the only way we can admit you to the private Facebook classroom
  • Your computer or device should be capable of viewing video with a strong enough internet connection to stream the lesson
  • Check ahead of time to ensure that you can hear and see videos on Facebook (you usually need to both click into a live video and unmute it in order to hear and read and add comments.)
  • I highly recommend that if you don't already have it, that you download the Facebook app on your phone or device and get logged in and set up. This will make it so you can easily take in-progress photos to post for feedback directly from the app.

Administrative Details & Class Policies:

  • Unfortunately, because this is an online class where you can view the content and have full access even if you miss the livestream (which will be archived in the group,) there are no cancellations or refunds.
  • Since this is an online class, we just want to make sure it's clear that you'll be responsible for providing all of your own supplies (please see the supply list above.) I've tried to give lots of options and alternatives so that you can pull from your stash wherever possible. The Artistic Stamper also has many of the supplies available in their shop so if you have something you need or see something that you want to try, I hope you'll help support the store. (And contact the shop if you need something that isn't linked - they may have it!)
